Two organisations who deal with domestic violence have been chosen as charities of the year by Telford and Wrekin’s Mayor.

Councillor Rae Evans will, during her year in office, fundraise for and support ‘West Mercia Women’s Aid’ and ‘Refuge’.

‘West Mercia Women’s Aid’ runs a 24-hour helpline, three refuges and an expanding outreach service offering support to victims of domestic violence in the borough.

‘Refuge’ provides a range of services including refuges, community outreach and independent advocacy.

Councillor Evans said: “I’ve chosen these charities to focus my fundraising efforts on during my year as Mayor and want to create more awareness in the borough around domestic violence.

“If through our work just one person can be saved from a future blighted by this type of abuse that is sadly so common, then my efforts will have been worthwhile.

“As a borough that supports the White Ribbon campaign to end domestic abuse, I feel it’s only right I use my time as mayor to help focus on this issue”

White Ribbon Day is a symbolic campaign which demonstrates that domestic abuse is unacceptable.  Telford and Wrekin is accredited as a White Ribbon Town which symbolises that it is standing up to condemn violence against women.
