Competition winner names baby T-Rex
An exciting Facebook competition which closed yesterday gave people the opportunity to name one of the dinosaurs that will be taking over Telford Town Park on 16 July at Carnival of Giants.
An extremely special, and scarily lifelike, baby T-Rex will be roaming the Park during his very first appearance in the UK at Carnival of Giants, but this young dino was without a name and so the Facebook community were sent to the rescue and given the task of naming him before he arrives.
Over 100 entries were received, with suggestions ranging from Chompy, Stompee and Roary, all the way to Trevor, Frank and Derek.
However, after lots of deliberation from the team bringing the T-Rex to Telford, the name chosen for the prehistoric baby is Barnum.
Claire Shaw’s seven year old son Liam came up with the winning name and he has won a family ticket to Monstersaurus at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place on Sunday 9 October.
As many young boys are, Liam is dinosaur mad and wanted to name the dinosaur after the first man to discover a T-Rex fossil, Barnum Brown.
Barnum will be just one of the highlights at Carnival of Giants this July. He will be joined by lots of dinosaur friends making it a day not to be missed for all those dino mad kids (not forgetting the adults!) out there.
A colourful parade featuring 500 people being led by talented musicians Skiband at 2pm will be another highlight of the day. And with activities, sports, a market, mini-fair, carnival games and much more, it will be hard to pack everything into the day which starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Culture, Sport, Parks and Green Spaces, said: “There were a lot of imaginative competition entries and I’d like to thank everyone for their suggestions. Barnum is a great name for the baby T-Rex and I expect he’ll be in demand on the day as he roams around Telford Town Park. Congratulations to Liam, I hope you enjoy your trip to the theatre in October.
“There’s so much more than Barnum at Carnival of Giants too, and the excitement is building as the day looms closer.
“This free event is set to be one of the biggest in the borough this year, so make sure it’s in your diary and bring along the family to meet Barnum and get a selfie with him to share on the Carnival of Giants Facebook page.”
Carnival of Giants takes place from 11am-4pm on Saturday 16 July with the parade at 2pm. To find out more about what there is to see and do on the day visit www.discovertelford.co.uk/giants and also check out the facebook page /carnivalofgiants
Carnival of Giants is made possible using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council funding and sponsorship from Telford Shopping Centre.
