Telford set to fly the flag for England

Telford and Wrekin is set to fly the flag for England in the coming days – with the national football team attempting to win the European Championships for the first time.

There is double the reason to be patriotic at this time with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrating her 90th birthday on Friday as well.

In Euro 2016, England will be competing in a group with Russia, Wales and Slovakia in the first phase of Euro 2016, which is being staged across the channel in France.

Residents in Telford and Wrekin are being urged to join in the celebratory spirit and the council is planning a photo competition via social media to judge the most imaginative example of how people are celebrating the tournament and supporting their country.

People can post their pictures on a thread that will be live on the council’s Facebook page (search for Telford & Wrekin Council) tomorrow (Fri) or on Twitter @TelfordWrekin using the hashtag #eurotw. A mystery prize will be available for the best, which will be judged by the borough’s mayor Councillor Rae Evans. Check the council's social media feeds over the weekend for what that will be.

Euro 2016 will even have a small effect on Telford’s political machine – with next week’s Cabinet meeting moved to earlier in the day to 12 noon at the Park Lane Centre in Woodside to avoid clashing with England’s 2pm kick off against Wales.

The council’s Café Go, on the ground floor of Addenbrooke House, will also be decked with bunting and flags to get into the spirit of the tournament – which starts on Friday evening when hosts France play Romania.

Elsewhere, one of the Council’s prominent floral displays in Ketley will be transformed into the red and white flag of St George next week and will be in bloom throughout the summer.

Pupils at St Luke’s Primary in Trench are celebrating the opening of the tournament on Friday with a fish and chip lunch where they will also celebrate with England flags and bunting.

Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Shaun Davies said: “It’s great to see support for the England team from all over the borough – it gives me a lot of pride to see local support in Telford for the natonal team and this is a really special time for the country, with the football starting at the same time as Her Majesty’s landmark 90th birthday.

“Euro 2016 promises to be a fantastic tournament with four countries from the British Isles represented and hopefully they will all do well.”
