Council outlines why Land Registry should stay in Telford and out of the private sector
“We believe that privatisation will be something the Government will come to regret.”
The warning comes from Council leader Shaun Davies over potential threats to hundreds of jobs at the Land Registry in Telford.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is consulting on its plans to privatise the Land Registry, which employs about 300 people based in Hall Park Way.
Under the plans, a private operator would take over the registering of the ownership of land and property in England and Wales.
In his response, Councillor Davies argues that the operation should remain in Government, that it is providing good customer service and is making money.
Councillor Davies said in his response to the consultation:
“Telford’s long and successful association with the Land Registry has created a strong relationship with the borough and there is no doubt that the location of an important Government agency here has played a significant role in strengthening Telford’s profile as an inward investment destination.”
Earlier this spring, Councillor Davies wrote to Business Secretary Sajid Javid calling for an urgent meeting.
Councillor Davies has also called on the borough’s two MPs, Lucy Allan and Mark Pritchard, to support his call to meet the Business Secretary.
He added: “I am still pressing to meet the Business Secretary to discuss our concerns over the future of this significant local employer and the highly skilled jobs it provides.
“We will do all we can to keep the Land Registry in Telford.”
