Business Secretary urged for talks on Land Registry

The Council is again calling on Business Secretary Sajid Javid for an urgent meeting to discuss a potential threat to hundreds of jobs in Telford.

Business Secretary urged for talks on Land Registry

Around 300 jobs at the Land Registry in Telford town centre face uncertainty after earlier this year the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills issued a consultation document on the possible privatisation of the Land Registry.

The 300 skilled jobs play an important part in the borough’s economy where high value added employment is key helping the borough’s economy and economic value grow and narrowing the gap with more wealthy areas of England.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Business, Neighbourhood and Customer Services, has again pressed Business Secretary Sajid Javid for a response to these concerns.

“I wrote to the Business Secretary on this subject on 5 April and he replied saying that we may be able to meet but I have heard nothing more since.

“The potential threat to jobs at the Land Registry is a serious concern and at the same time I also raised this issue with Telford MP Lucy Allan who has offered to help us.

“The Council is working very hard to improve the borough’s economy and want to explore how we could support the Registry to stay in Telford.

“Any jobs losses linked to the Land Registry could cause a drain of talent from the borough and we must work together to ensure that we continue to move Telford and Wrekin’s economy forward and do everything we can to support this.

“We need to speak with the Business Secretary and gain reassurances for both the Land Registry employees and for the borough’s economy.”
