Two more new PETs launched this week
The two latest Parish Environmental Teams (PETs) to serve areas of Telford start this week in Oakengates and Dawley Hamlets.
Telford & Wrekin Council has set up partnerships with both Oakengates Town Council and Dawley Hamlets Parish Council to get two more of these very popular teams serving the local community and environment..
Parish Environmental Teams carry out enhanced environmental maintenance above and beyond what is already done by the council’s own maintenance teams.
The two new teams have a TWS Ltd employee, an apprentice and vehicle to service and maintain their respective parish areas.
Each team will be equipped with a range of small powered equipment including a strimmer, hedge cutters and hand tools.
They work to a local works programme, which has been developed and agreed by the Parish. The team not only maintains the area with a ‘pride of patch’ responsibility but also report any local issues which they come across and cannot fix themselves.
The team is a dedicated to the Parish area and will also undertake other environmental improvement schemes so to enhance the local area.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “The scheme to set up parish environmental teams to further improve local neighbourhoods has been an unqualified success.
“These latest announcements mean that we now have 11 PETs across the borough. As well as significantly contributing to an enhanced environment in local communities, they have also created jobs.
“The recruitment of apprentices for these two teams is under way and people should be in post by the summer.”
Councillor Andy Burford, chairman of Dawley Hamlets Parish Council, said: “We are pleased to be making a contribution to the maintenance of the area during these very difficult financial times.
“We need to act in partnership with both Telford & Wrekin Council and local residents to preserve essential services and the PET is an important example of this approach.”
Councillor Stephen Reynolds, mayor of Oakengates, said: “Oakengates Town Council fully supports the work of the Parish Environmental Team and we hope to build on the success of other towns and parishes.
“Our aim is that our PET will further enhance the local environment of Oakengates and Ketley Bank for both residents and businesses.”
