The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Trophy Tour will be coming to Telford Tennis Centre in Oakengates on Saturday 7 May as part of a national Trophy Tour of Great Britain launched by The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) this month.

GLL, the new operators of Telford Tennis Centre, are also holding a Community Open Day from 1-5pm, where there will be lots of free on court activity for all the family, whatever age or ability, with the Davis Cup arriving at 3pm.

Following Great Britain’s historic win against Belgium in the 2015 Davis Cup Final, when Team GB hoisted the trophy for the first time in 79 years, the LTA wanted to celebrate this momentous occasion by delivering the Davis Cup Trophy Tour across the country to thank the tennis community including players, coaches venues and volunteers who supported the team on their incredible journey.

It also wanted to inspire a new generation to pick up a racket and get involved in tennis.

On the day people will get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and be pictured with the impressive Davis Cup Trophy up close and personal.

The event is free for everyone to attend and Tennis Shropshire will also be there running a number of on court activities for people to get involved with.

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Service and Culture, said: “We are extremely privileged to be welcoming the Davis Cup Trophy to the Tennis Centre in Oakengates in May.

“What a fantastic achievement to win the trophy after 79 long years.

“I’m thrilled that Telford has been chosen as a host venue on the tour of the country, this is a fantastic opportunity for us to inspire our next generation of tennis aces and aim to make sure that it’s not another 79 years before the trophy belongs to Team GB again.

Bob Kerr, Chairman of Tennis Shropshire, added: “To allow the local community to share the successes of the GB team has already driven an increased passion and enthusiasm for tennis in the area.  Thanks to the LTA for allowing us to be a part of this momentous achievement.”

Leon Smith, Davis Cup Captain, commented: “I can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction when they see the Davis Cup and sharing a bit of that passion we had on court will hopefully encourage others to get involved and choose tennis as part of their everyday lives.”

The Davis Cup Trophy Tour will visit over 50 destinations, including Telford.  The full list of destinations for the Tour can be found at www.lta.org.uk/daviscuptrophytour
