Council seeks meeting with Business Secretary over future of Land Registry
Telford & Wrekin Council has called on its local MPs to support its request to meet with the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills to discuss the future of the Land Registry in Telford.
The request comes after the recent announcement that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has issued a consultation document relating to the potential privatisation of the Land Registry.
The Land Registry is a significant employer in Telford and Wrekin, providing 300 skilled and well paid jobs that provide an important balance in our local economy where high value added employment is essential if we are to address a widening GVA gap with the rest of England.
The importance of employers, like the Land Registry, to Telford is recognised by the local business community: the Telford Business Board and the Marches LEP are working hand in hand with the Council to support growth in our economy.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Business, Neighbourhood and Customer Services, has written to the Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, as well as the two borough MPs to raise the concerns over the possible privatisation of the Land Registry.
Councillor Davies said: “We are concerned to hear the potential threat to these jobs at the Land Registry and the loss of a major and longstanding local employer who is core to a key and growing ICT/digital sector.
“We have been working very hard to improve the borough’s economy. Any loss of jobs linked to the Land Registry risks causing a talent drain from the borough and a reversal of the recent positive steps the borough and the business community have made in investing in Telford.”
