World Book Day celebrated with special event at Southwater Library

The special event, supported by the Library service, saw a class of Key Stage 2 pupils from Randlay Primary School visiting Southwater Library where they toured the library and had a special lunch before having a story read to them by a visiting story teller. World Book Day is a celebration of reading.

It is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said: “World Book Day is a great way to encourage our children and young people to enjoy reading.

“I’d like to thank the Council’s School Catering Service and Library Service for making this event happen for the class from Randlay Primary School.”
