Council backs Clean For The Queen campaign
Telford & Wrekin Council is backing a campaign to get a million people out and about nationwide cleaning up their communities.
Clean for The Queen aims to give the country a tidy-up ahead of The Queen’s 90th birthday in April and its main focus in Telford and Wrekin is this weekend (Mar 4-6).
Telford & Wrekin Council and the Telford Green Spaces Partnership are joining forces to take part.
A number of litter picks and clean ups are planned on Friday March 4 and locations that will be targeted include Madebrook Pools Nature Reserve (11am-noon), Telford Town Park (10am-2pm), Telford Forge Retail Park (1pm).
Also on Friday but with times to be confirmed are events at Lightmoor Park and School, Legges Way in Madeley, Wellington Road and Dale Road in Coalbrookdale and the Silkin Way from Blists Hill Tunnel in Coalport.
Friday and Saturday will see a clean up of the Ironbridge Way and there will be hedge laying training at Dothill on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 3.30pm.
Saturday and Sunday will see events at Apley Woods between 10am and 1pm and there will be two events on Sunday only – at the Guildhall in Newport at 10am and at the Cockshutt at 11am, meeting in the car park of the Lamb Inn in Wrockwardine Wood.
Clean For The Queen is backed by all the nation’s major anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy and the Campaign to Protect Rural England and delivered as part of the council's Pride In Your Community programme.
Councils across the country including Telford & Wrekin Council will be encouraging and supporting groups and individuals who want to ‘do their bit’ to help clear up the litter that blights our streets, parks and other public areas.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Clean for The Queen and we would encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations in the borough to take part.
“Litter is a problem that councils across the UK spend the best part of £1billion clearing up every year. Clean For The Queen supports our efforts locally to make Telford and Wrekin look the best it possibly can, demonstrated by the creation of a number of parish environmental teams around the borough.”
Clean for The Queen campaign director Adrian Evans said: “By taking part and clearing up the country, individuals and communities will not only be giving The Queen a suitably impressive gift to mark her 90th birthday, they will also be giving themselves and their area a present – a clean space in which to live, work and play.”
