Telford & Wrekin Council wins prestigious Access Award

The award, which was shared with Telford Bridleways Association, was presented by television star Martin Clunes, the President of the British Horse Society, in recognition of the work the Council has done to dedicate new public rights of way.

Dedicating new bridleways gives the public a legal right of access on foot, cycle and horseback.

A number of areas benefited from this work with Telford Town Park receiving the greatest number of new routes.

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “I’m delighted that the Council has been recognised for this very important work protecting and dedicating routes for future use in the borough.

“It’s easy to see the development that is taking place all across the borough, but it’s not always obvious that we are also working hard to protect our green spaces and pathways.

“Receiving this award highlights the efforts that staff, members of the public and councillors are making to ensure that the borough grows with balance, and with consideration of the needs of all residents and visitors.

“I would like to congratulate all those involved in achieving this award and the work that continues to take place to widen the right of way network further.”

Anthony Francis-Jones, Chairman of Telford Bridleways Association, added: “In many places routes may have been on the ground but they had no legal status and were therefore not protected from development and loss.  This even included parts of the Silkin Way.

“Now this and many other routes are protected for the public for the future.  Great work has been done by everyone involved to help bring the project to fruition.”

It is hoped that further work will build on this by looking at other areas in and around the borough that could benefit from a similar treatment, giving users even more access to the wonderful spaces that Telford and Wrekin has to offer.
