Councillor George Whyle

Telford & Wrekin Council has learned with great sadness of the death of Councillor George Whyle.

Councillor George Whyle gave 55 years of public service as a councillor and was made an honorary freeman of the borough in 2011.

He served on Wellington Rural District Council, Shropshire County Council and Wrekin Council and Lilleshall Parish Council in the years between 1947 and 2002.

He was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Services to Local Government in recognition for the work he did while a councillor for Wellington Rural District Council.

Born in Oakengates in 1922 before moving to nearby Donnington aged five, George Whyle also sat on the bench as a magistrate for 29 years and was the Secretary of the local AEEU branch (now Unite) for 25 years.

Council Leader Kuldip Sahota, said: “It is hard to find the right words to say about someone as supportive and dedicated as George.

“He was a hard working councillor for over half a century and did his very best for all those who asked him for help. He will be missed immensely by all those who knew him.”
