Green Guarantee consultation to begin
Telford & Wrekin Council’s consultation on plans to protect at least 150 green spaces in the borough begins on Monday (2 NOV).
The Green Guarantee identifies areas of councilowned land that it wants to protect from any future development, in addition tothe six Local Nature Reserves and eight Sites of Special Scientific Interest,three Fields in Trust sites and Village Greens already protected in the borough.
The first phase sees 116 sites that will be formallyrecognised areas of open space for leisure, recreation and biodiversitypurposes and protected from any development.
The initial list was approved by the Cabinet (onThursday 15 October).
Consultation and engagement with local interestgroups and organisations via Town and Parish Councils will begin on 2 Novemberto ensure support for the identified Green Guarantee sites, gather any localknowledge and to clarify site information including site boundaries.
Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member forHousing, Public Health and Protection, said: “Our Green Guarantee will ensurethat we can protect council owned land that people use for their leisure andrecreation from future development.
“We want to ensure that everyone has the opportunityto benefit from the green spaces we have in the borough and that these will beprotected for future generations to enjoy.
“Living close to accessible and open green spaces isgood for people’s health and helps tackle issues such as stress, obesity, heartdisease and mental health as well as ensure that our borough continues to havethe facilities of a modern progressive town with many accessible green spaces.”

The consulation will run from Monday 2 Novemberuntil 30 January 2016.
Later next year the Council will ask the community toidentify an additional at least 50 Community Green Spaces, which are owned byTelford & Wrekin Council, to be included in the Green Guarantee. These willbe identified through further public consultation from December 2016.
