Nominations open for young people’s awards scheme

Nominations are now open for a special awards scheme for children and young people of Telford and Wrekin who have made a difference in their community or improved and enriched people’s lives.

Nominations open for young people’s awards scheme

The Telford Tommy is in its second year and people have until 23 November to nominate potential award winners.

Telford & Wrekin Council – which organises the awards scheme – received nominations from a very broad range of people last year.

This includes voluntary and community groups, dance and sports groups, charities, parents, carers, neighbours, teachers, youth workers and other council staff such as children and family locality services and social services staff.

Last year the council recognised more than 200 children and young people and this year would like to recognise more.

Award categories include:

  • Caring for or volunteering to help others
  • Fundraising
  • Triumph over personal adversity
  • Bravery and courage
  • Involvement in community projects
  • Contribution to school, training or college
  • Learning in non formal environments
  • Sports, hobbies, arts and culture
  • Business, innovation and enterprise
  • Acting as a voice for other children and young people
  • Raising the positive profile of children and young people

Successful children, young people and groups will receive a certificate of recognition.

Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Children, Young People and Families, said: “Young people do lots of fantastic things to improve their communities and enrich their own lives and those of others.

“This is a great opportunity for that work to be recognised and to raise the positive profile of young people and I look forward to seeing all the nominations.”

The awards are named after Thomas Telford, the Scottish architect and civil engineer from whom Telford takes its name.
