Dig for local history in the Park
Telford Town Park will host an archaeological dig led by Nexus Heritage next week, from Thursday 16 – Sunday 19 October.
After the success of the dig a year ago, which uncovered a flint dating back to prehistoric times, members of the public are invited to take part in this year’s exciting dig which looks at a different period in time.
Spaces are limited, so anyone interested in taking part must register as soon as possible. Visitors are also welcome to come along and watch the dig in action on the Saturday and Sunday.
This year the community excavation will focus on discovering archaeological remains from the pre-industrial period and will take place on an area within the park known locally as the 'Village Green'.
Trenches will be situated within former fields that according to historic map regression have not been affected by nearby industrial activity. Instead the investigation will be focusing on the more distant past. The archaeologists are aware of a small settlement which existed in the area several hundred years ago called ‘Little Ley’ which is referred to in the Domesday Book.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet lead for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “This is a great opportunity for residents to get involved in a real life archaeological dig and explore a piece of Telford’s history.
“Last year’s dig proved really popular with lots of local people getting involved.
“There were some really interesting finds and I’m excited to see what this year’s dig turns up.”
The event is funded by the Parks for People programme, a joint initiative by the BIG Lottery and Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and is part of series of archaeological digs which have taken place in the park over recent years.
The dig will also coincide with the Southwater opening event on Saturday 18 October: both events will offer a fantastic opportunity for visitors to look back and celebrate the history of the local area as well as the future.
