Pupils clean up school site as part of Big Tidy Up campaign
Pupils at a Telford primary school have been promoting active citizenship by tackling unwanted rubbish dropped on their site as part of national campaign The Big Tidy Up.
Hollinswood Primary School and Nursery’s Eco Committee worked as a team to plan the event to improve the local area. This included collecting rubbish that had found its way over the school fences.
The eco committee was joined for the litter pick by Year Two children along with head teacher Glenn Atkinson, ward member Councillor Chris Turley and local parish council staff.
Mr Atkinson said: “We collected lots of litter including sweet wrappers, fruit peel, drinks tin, paper, crisp packets, carrier bags, wire, tin foil and even an animal skeleton.
“We hope our efforts will encourage everyone in the area to properly dispose of their rubbish – in the bin and not on the ground.
“By caring about the future of our local environment, we can support biodiversity in our school grounds.
“We need a litter free environment to encourage as much wildlife as possible to live in our hedgerows and our fields.”
Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “I would like to congratulate the staff and pupils of the school on their efforts to clean up their site, it was really heartening to learn how much they care about their environment.”
The Big Tidy Up is the nation’s biggest ever litter pick and sees people encouraged to clean up their community. By bridging the gap between generations and cultures, it unites neighbourhoods and enables people to come together to transform their public spaces.
