Britain’s leading Town Planner to visit Southwater development
Telford & Wrekin Council will welcome Britain’s leading Town Planner to its Southwater development on Wednesday (25 MAR).
Janet Askew, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is visiting every part of the UK during 2015, from London to the Shetland Islands.
On Wednesday, Councillors Bill McClements and Charles Smith will welcome the RTPI president to Telford, which will include visits to Southwater and the Lawley development.
Southwater One and the Southwater development have already received national recognition:
· It was a finalist in the Public Sector category of the Urban Design Group’s National Urban Design Awards 2015,
· It was a finalist in two categories in the Local Government Chronicle Awards,
· It has been shortlisted for four categories in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors West Midlands Awards: Commercial, Infrastructure, Regeneration and Tourism and Leisure, and
· It has been placed on the Midlands shortlist for The Royal Institute of British Architects’ Annual Awards.
A spokesman for Janet Askew, RTPI president, said: “Telford is gaining a national reputation for imaginative planning in one of the fastest-growing towns in the UK.
“Janet is very really keen to see what is happening in terms of good planning and excited to see the development that has taken place in Telford, particularly at Southwater”.
“I have been pleased at how much regeneration in continuing across the UK in spite of the tough times being experienced by local authorities.”
Councillor Charles Smith, cabinet member for Housing Development and Borough Towns, said: “I’m pleased to welcome Janet Askew to Telford this week; it is an opportunity to showcase the regeneration that has been undertaken in the borough.”
