Time capsule returns to Telford Town Park
Telford Town Park will welcome Spring tomorrow (SAT 28 MAR) with a brand new free family event, as well as a ceremony to celebrate the relocation of the Park’s time capsule.
15 years ago, a time capsule was buried by a number of local parish councils and schools just a short walk away from Spout Farm, the former visitor centre within the Town Park.
The capsule contained a number of historical images, news items and archived literature relating to the park and its surrounding area.
In 2010, the time capsule, which takes the form of a sculpture, was removed and placed into storage to make way for what is now Southwater Lake.
As part of the Spring Into The Park event there will be a ceremony at the time capsule’s new location within the Chelsea Gardens, where it will be part of a group of sculptures.
Additional documents and photos have been added to the time capsule to represent changes over the 15 years since it was first buried.
Spring Into The Park is a new, all day, free family event, celebrating the great outdoors and the completion of improvement works to the park.
With an Easter theme, the event will be a spring extravaganza with activities happening in pockets across the park:
· There will be a fun fair in the arena, alongside scout and leisure activities.
· There will be a petting farm with the chance to hold bunnies and chicks, feed the lambs and donkey rides. As well as a horse and cart ride to Stirchley Chimney.
· There will be special appearances from Peter Rabbit throughout the day in Telford Town Park and an Easter egg hunt with a yummy reward for all those who take part.
· There will also be arts and crafts activities in Southwater, where you’ll be able to make Easter bonnets, lily pads to go on the lake and get your face painted.
· Travel Telford will be running bike and scooter competitions for children by the bandstand. Bring along your bike or scooter and you may win a prize.
· There will also be activities for older children and parents, including fishing, pond dipping and bird box making workshops.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for leisure services and culture, said: “We’re really excited to be celebrating the time capsule’s return to the Town Park as it acts as a record of the surrounding area.
“Spring Into The Park is set to be a great day out for all the family with so many activities aimed at all ages.
“Telford Town Park is a huge asset for the borough and events like this showcase the different attractions we have in the park.”
Spring Into The Park is on Saturday 28 March in Telford Town Park between 10am–4pm.
The event is in partnership with BBC Radio Shropshire and The Scout Association.
