Free day of reading celebration at Southwater Library

Telford & Wrekin Council is holding a free day of reading celebration at the Southwater Library on Saturday April 11.

Free day of reading celebration at Southwater Library

Southwater Reads is an innovative project which involves award winning poet Jean Atkin, who has been the library’s Reader In Residence during the past few months.

She has organised a series of events and opportunities at Southwater during the course of her residency and the Readers’ Day a week on Saturday is the final event.

Jean will be at Southwater Library all day writing on her vintage typewriter and visitors to the library are encouraged to come and interrupt her.

She will be encouraging everyone – no matter what their age or literary ambition – to join in and help create a giant Southwater Poem, which will be displayed later in the library.

The day will also feature a special workshop titled Write A Doctor Who Radio Play workshop with William Gallagher, who has written a string of successful Doctor Who radio plays. This runs from 11am-12 noon and is suitable for teenagers and adults.

The library will also be welcoming The Escalator Poets, also known as Shrewsbury Poetry Stanza. They will be performing 15 minute pop up poetry sessions near the escalator at 12 noon, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Families can also join award winning storyteller Jake Evans for one of his legendary Story Walks or join in a Get Writing workshop for adults with Birmingham-based writer William Gallagher between 2-3pm.

Team librarian David Maiden said: "To book your place for any of the workshops or Story Walk, ring us at the library on 01952 382195 or email libraryenquiries@teleford.gov.uk"

The residency has been developed and managed by Southwater Library in Telford and West Midlands Readers Network with funding support from Arts Council England.
