The Place re-opens after refurbishment

The Place in Oakengates has now re-opened its doors following a six week refurbishment programme.

The venue has seen a number of improvements as part of plans to modernise and improve facilities and services for customers using the theatre, library and café.

Café at The Place, part of the Café Go brand, has been refurbished and extended to offer additional seating areas, relaxed spaces in the main foyer and now offers a pre-show dining experience, drinks and refreshments ahead of selected shows from September 2015.

The first show offering pre-show meals is Michael English on 3 September. People are advised to visit http://www.theplacetelford.com/ for more information or to book their meals in advance.

The theatre has a newly modelled box office with information points, and digital screens where theatre goers and customers will be able to find out about the latest shows and performances.

The fully licenced bar area is due for additional refurbishment in the autumn.

The new look Oakengates Library now offers a wider selection of books, reading materials self-service portal, and larger breakout areas for people.

The community  art room, located at the rear of the library has increased in size to support larger groups  such as the Carers Art Group, who regulary use the space for creative and cultural activities focused around health and well-being.

The room is also available for community hire and is suitable for creative activity due to its cleanable floor, tables and sink.

The theatre also hosts a wide range of private and community events in its existing facilities, the main hall, community room and bar areas.

Councillor Liz Clare, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture said: “Oakengates Theatre continues to attract more star acts every year and as a result we are experiencing increased footfall at the theatre, with more people travelling from outside of Telford to see live shows and performances.

“As a venue it’s therefore important that we provide our customers with easy access to information about shows and provide them with the ultimate theatre experience by offering pre-show dinning to encourage people to visit again.”

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Communities, Regeneration and Transport, added: “Public libraries continue to play a crucial role in local communities, no matter what their shape or size. As the needs of our customers change in this digital age it is important that we grow and develop our services in line with the times.

“For us this has included improving and updating the offer at, increasing the space available for the public to ensure they stay longer, as well as ensuring that there are reliable PCs and internet connections.”
