Two major Telford events to mark International Year of Light

Telford is set to celebrate the International Year of Light – with two major events in the borough in little more than a month.

Two major Telford events to mark International Year of Light
Firstly, the coming Bank Holiday weekend sees Architects Of Air come to the borough’s £250m Southwater development.

Architects Of Air are bringing the Mirazozo Luminarium to Southwater from Thursday 27 August to Monday August 31.

The monumental inflatable sculptures of Architects of Air have enchanted audiences around the world since 1992.

The walk in structure is designed as a maze of tunnels and domes to explore, providing a feast for the senses in beautiful light, colour and sound. Audiences describe the experience as futuristic and transforming.

The second event is the Night of Heritage Light on Thursday 1 October between 7-10pm.

This will see the Society of Light and Lighting celebrate the skills of its members and promote UNESCO World Heritage sites, making history come to light.

The Night of Heritage Light will illuminate several key landmarks at UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Iron Bridge in the Ironbridge Gorge.

Other sites to be illuminated include Tower Bridge in London, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Blenheim Palace and the old and new towns of Edinburgh.

Councillor Liz Clare, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: "We are truly privileged that our iconic Iron Bridge is one of just ten locations in the British Isles chosen to be illuminated as part of the Night Of Heritage Light.

"This is fantastic for Telford’s profile and we are delighted to be taking part and helping UNESCO and the Society of Light and Lighting mark the International Year Of Light."

Liz Peck, president of the Society of Light and Lighting, added: "UNESCO is dedicated to preserving our historic sites across the world. This event is an opportunity to show how lighting transforms our landscapes and brings history to life."

Full details can be found at www.nohl-sll.org/ and the hash tag to promote the event is #NOHL.

The International Year Of Light consists of co-ordinated activities so that people of all ages and all backgrounds can gain an appreciation of the central role of light in science and culture..
