Major works scheme for Wellington centre
Telford & Wrekin Council is to carry out works to improve the pedestrian access on Market Street in Wellington. This will involve installing a shared space area.
The works have just got under way and have taken approximately six weeks to complete. They have been prompted by a public consultation that took place in October 2014.
A road closure will be in place whilst the works are being carried out. The closure will be between Station Road and the Post Office in Market Street.
Pedestrian access immediately in front of local businesses will be available throughout the works but closures to traffic are unavoidable due to the nature of the work.
In order to minimise the impact on the local area and businesses, Telford & Wrekin Council is proposing a package of measures to allow access and deliveries.
These include reversing the one way order on Queen Street between Church Street and Ten Tree Croft. This will allow vehicles delivering to Church Street businesses to turn down Queen Street and rejoin the ring road via Charlton Street.
Parking on Queen Street will be maintained as far as possible, although it may be necessary to suspend a small number of bays to facilitate turning movements from Church Street.
The council will also suspend the one way system between Wilkinson’s car park and the Spiceland restaurant on Market Street. This will be combined with allowing access for delivery vehicles only.
An area for turning will be kept clear to allow delivery vehicles to turn in the road alongside Spiceland.
Where possible, parking on the northern side of Market Street will be retained. However, this will be reviewed to ensure the safe operation of Market Street.
Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Transport, said: "We would like to apologise for the inconvenience and disruption that this work will cause but ultimately it will deliver a much improved pedestrian access to Market Street, which is what the people of Wellington said they wanted in last year’s public consultation."
