68 borough-wide sites to benefit from footway programme
Telford & Wrekin Council is in the early stages of a four month scheme as part of the Pride In Your Community programme to lay footway surfacing at 68 sites across the entire borough.
The work involves a low cost treatment to protect the surface of footways with the aim of extending the life of the underlying tarmac surface.
The treatment is laid to provide a protective layer of material over the existing pavement surface, preventing both wear and tear and water ingress into the surface, which is a main cause of footway damage.
This is the second phase of Telford & Wrekin Council’s footway maintenance programme, having completed patching on each of the sites in the last 12 months.
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Communities, said: "I apologise for any disruption caused by this programme of work but ultimately it will save us both money in further maintenance and resources.
"We have identified 68 sites that will benefit from this programme and we will be updating the web page on a weekly basis to reflect any changes caused by the weather."
Footways are not normally closed to lay surfacing but access to some properties may be restricted for short periods and on busy streets traffic management is put in place to provide a safe pedestrian route around the works.
Some sites will require a footway closure but this will be localized to areas where there are no alternative pedestrian routes available.
The work to protect footway tarmac is expected to last at least until the end of November but it is a weather dependent process
Signs will be put up at least seven days in advance at each site to advise residents that work will be taking place. Work on busier routes will be between 9.30am and 3.30pm and will normally be completed in one day.
Prior to surfacing works taking place, a number of minor operations including weed killing, sweeping and the cutting back of vegetation will take place. The work will be managed by TWS, who have sub-contracted it to JPCS.
