WWI Ancestry

Many people know their immediate family history, but what if there was help available to dig a bit deeper? Who would want to trace back their ancestors from WWI and find out more about them?

WWI Ancestry

Anyone with an interest in tracing back their ancestry can benefit from sessions in Telford and Wrekin Libraries aimed at helping people trace their ancestors from WWI.

Drop-in sessions are held at Southwater Library every Thursday from 10.30am-12.30pm. Volunteers are always on hand to help people starting tracing their WWI ancestors using free library resources such as Ancestry and British Newspaper archive.

There are also some WWI ancestry taster sessions being held throughout the next few months. These sessions provide an introduction to searching and using the military records on Ancestry to get people started on their own family’s WW1 history.

Sessions will be taking place at Madeley, Newport, Wellington and Southwater Libraries.

Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Communities, Regeneration and Transport, said: “I’m sure there are many people out there who would like to learn more about their family history but don’t know where to start.

“With so much information now available online there has never been a better time to begin.

“And these sessions are the perfect opportunity for people gain that little bit of knowledge they need to get them on their way to find out who their family was back in WWI and perhaps even further back.

“Our Library service offer so much more than the borrowing of books, so get along to your local library and see what’s on.”
