Superfast Broadband - a few facts

We are aware that there was a debate in the Commons yesterday on broadband in which Telford was mentioned. We welcome the interest in this issue and would like to set out a few facts.

Superfast Broadband - a few facts

The broadband package that was on offer back in 2011-12 would have been a joint package with Shropshire and would have cost three quarters of a million pounds

This was also at a time when central government had not decided whether it would put any funds into the Ironbridge World Heritage site to stabilise the Gorge, meaning the council would have had to find £8m to carry out work that was getting ever more urgent.

Lightmoor is a new and developing area and we’re really pleased to confirm that parts of Lightmoor are included in both BDUK and commercial programmes and the council is working closely with suppliers and developers to ensure that the future needs of the borough are met which includes provision in our local planning policy.

The new agreement signed this year with BT will reach at least 98 per cent of the borough by the autumn of 2017 which is one of the highest in the country and a great outcome for Telford and Wrekin. As ever, we have a duty to ensure our residents’ money is used as wisely as possible and we have done that with superfast broadband.
